Ok, admit it. You have songs on your iPod (or mix CD’s or computer or whatever) that you should be embarassed that you have. Those songs that you rock out to in the shower and bellow out in the car; the tunes that you just SHOULDN’T love but you simply can’t help it. Sometimes they’re cheesy, sometimes they’re just plain bad – but you love them anyway. The songs that are like that one boyfriend or girlfriend you had – you look back and think “what was I thinking?”
So, should I die and someone find these secret gems on my iPod, I am going to save them from having to publicly humiliate me. I am going to admit, here and now, some of the embarassing songs I own:
- Mmmmbop by Hanson – it’s just damn catchy
- Wannabe by The Spice Girls – ok, who wants some girl power?
- I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing (the Coca-Cola jingle) – ahhh, the childhood memories
- Bust a Move by Young MC and Wild Thing by Tone Loc – yikes, were these really the songs of our teenage years?
- Hold On by Wilson Phillips and After the Rain by Nelson – oh, the teen angst that these songs recall
- various camp songs like The Princess Pat, Kookabura, Barges, 500 Miles, and The Cannibal King – thank you Sprucelands campers
- Just the Way You Are by Bruno Mars – what can I say, it has sentimental value and I will always love the person who gave this song to me
- the entire soundtrack to The Rocky Horror Picture Show – the cult classic is a Halloween tradition for me
- my favorites from the Statler Brothers, John Denver, and Conway Twitty – my mom and dad used to listen to these
- bagpipe music – yes, I *know* it sounds like cats being murdered but I like it
- gospel hymns like Just A Closer Walk With Thee, Amazing Grace, I’ll Fly Away, The Rugged Cross – they make me think of some very special people in my life
- Lift Every Voice – ok, I admit it, I was trying to learn the words to “the black national anthem” to impress my mother-in-law
- the greatest hits of Peter, Paul & Mary, Pete Seeger, and the Kingston Trio – give me a guitar and I’m ready to folk
- the cast albums for about 900 Broadway shows (including Ragtime, Rent, South Pacific, Oklahoma, Sweet Charity, Phantom of the Opera, Showboat, Godspell, Oliver!, Carousel, Tommy, Titanic, Side Show, and more)
My brother once told me that I am “musically schizophrenic” and after looking over my iPod list, I guess I have to agree. Who else has a playlist that runs from Glenn Miller to Lady Gaga, from Pitbull to Patsy Cline, from Blondie to the Boston Pops? But surely I can’t be the only one that has eclectic music tastes. So go ahead, share with me, you’ll feel better….
haha, that’s so funny. i guess i have weird songs on my ipod.. maybe not old songs, but the kind of songs that shuffle in the dressing room at hockey and everyone goes; “HAHAHA EW” but, whatever, all of use were/are weird sometimes. just gotta laugh it off, and keep going!
but my ipod has weird songs like:
-Pants On The Ground, unknown
-Butterfly Fly Away, Hannah Montana (lame right?!?)
-Sweet Home Alabama, Eminem <– this one is a personal recording of eminem singing his remix to Sweet Home Alabama!! never listen to it.. but defiantly a good find!
“High on You” by Survivor. Seriously. Could it get much more cheesy ’80s hair band than that?
Thank you for the forum to admit it. This was better than therapy! 🙂
Mikalee, people like you and I know the terrible truth: Hair bands are awesome!
I used to crank the entire “Vital Signs” cassette (shows how long ago it was) in my car when I was out on Friday nights … and “High On You” was one of the best.
I’ve got everything from old-school Britney Spears to Finntroll to 50 Cent to The Smashing Pumpkins to a few random country songs.
Nice post. 🙂
Did not expect the Finntroll 🙂
Love this post. And some of those songs are awesome. Not all of them, mind you. But some of them.
My goodness, you’re taking it back waaaay old school! Wanna be– Spice Girls?? I loved that song growing up lol
I’m a 40 something male, and I have Lisa Loeb ‘I miss you’ on my iPod. I’ve been known to loudly, sing along too…
I love that song, whatever happened to her??!!
HAHA that was a good read 🙂
Just the way you are is pretty good but in the car with the windows open that is not going on. I alos liked lady gaga songs before now there all deleted. good post
lol hi kido!
Hehehe! I’ll admit to the Backstreet Boys…especially songs from the Millennium and Black and Blue albums. I still like TLC’s “Chasing Waterfalls” too. And I wouldn’t classify Broadway soundtracks as embarrassing music in the least. (For the record, I have Phantom, Little Mermaid, Lion King, and Into the Woods. I want to get some others!)
🙂
Good post!
http://tehcatspajamas.wordpress.com/
nice post ! i have random stuff on my ipod touch…i rather use it to look up things through wiifi…or watch videos on it, games too… but not that much of a listener to stuff…
I am just very thankful you did not mention any of my songs on the “embarrassing songs” lists! I dodged another bullet! 🙂
I admit to having some Carpenters on my iPod – but hey Karen has an amazing voice.
Great post.
Blessings,
Ava
xox
Here, here for the musically schizophrenic…glad to know that I am not alone!
I grew up with the
Backstreet boys “Everybody”
Britney Spears “Baby One More Time”
And N’SYNC “Bye Bye Bye”
Not ashamed (just a lil embarrassed), They called me Britney Spears in high school -.-” because I danced Like Britney and I loved Justine. Yes, remember when they were together. The good ol’ days 🙂
This is great! I can totally relate. The entire cast recordings of Wicked, The Phantom of the Opera, and Les Mis… some VeggieTales…. the Llama Song…. a Pokemon-based melody, and several Harry Potter and Hunger Games-based songs.
We all have them, I’m sure. XD
Oh, I love Broadway musical sountracks! Nothing embarrasing about them at all!…lol…. however bagpipe music???!!! LOL! Well, I do admire your varied taste…. :o)
I have Celine Dion on mine, though it was work related. Nobody believes me.
OK, I admit it- I have Wild Thing by Tone Loc on my iPod too. But I also have the Beatles, Run DMC, Primus, Glenn Miller, and the theme from the Wonder Woman TV show too.
That was a crappy version. I have the original Wild Thing by The Troggs.
Got that too!
Ok, here’s mine. I listen to it once and a while but I make sure it’s with the kids. They Might Be Giants – Here Come the ABCs. Good songs on there!
And to think the only song I knew from that entire list was Just the Way You Are! Don’t be embarrassed of owning any of those songs (even though I must admit I haven’t heard any of them). I’ve got a waaayyy more embarrassing one on my iPhone – I’ve got the Chicken Dance song. What can I say?! There’s something about that tune that’s addictive!
Congratulations on being Freshly Pressed!
Ashley, aka TheEverydayMuser
http://www.theeverydaymuser.wordpress.com
I have very eclectic tastes as well. my playlists range from country to classical, musicals to rock and even a little bubblegum (shh, don’t tell – Donny Osmond).
There’s a bit of Miley Cyrus on there eek!
Wait those songs are embarrassing? I guess I should reconsider Body Language by Heidi Montag. But I just loveeeeeeee how Spencer Pratt can drop a beat!
Nah, I’m not at all embarrased at what’s on my Ipod. People I’ve known, know that I’m pretty eclectic so I have a lot of different stuff. Things like 70’s Prog, 80’s music that hardly plays on the radio, metal, jazz, artsy stuff, international music and etc. Who cares what others think.
By the way: I think having the Rocky Horror Picture Show on your Ipod is really cool.
Haha. Funny post! I love all my music but am not embarrassed to admit what I listen to.
On my iPod I have – Counting Crows, Prince, Lady Gaga, Dennis Brown, Gentlemen, DJ Tiesto x 5, Tom Petty, 2PAC, The Doors, U2, Tegan & Sara (good ole Canadian girls.) Celine Dion, Mishka, Michael Buble.
Ok enough.
Hahaha……nice!
I’ve been playing guitar since the ’50s and I’ve accumulated a lot of songs. I do have some decent modern stuff but how about these:
A bunch of songs by the Sons of the Pioneers including personal favorites like Tumblin’ Tumbleweeds.
Some western swing like San Antonio Rose.
A personal favorite (obscure) The Bells by Phill Ochs which is an Edgar Allen Poe song set to music.
Love it – in fact, you have reminded me of some that I DON’T currently have on my iPod… but want to add!
I respectfully submit that I don’t think you should be embarrassed for liking what you like. How dull would life be if the same songs were playing on everyone’s iPods? If the person in the car next to me at the light thinks I’m a big dork for singing along to “A Whole New World,” then that’s his problem. 🙂
Great post, and congrats on being FP.
So what is wrong with being eclectic in your musical tastes? And if we didn’t like bad-but-easy-to-sing music, what would we all sing together in the bar when we are drunk?
“Sweet Caroline, buam, buam, buam”
Oh gosh, I’ve been thinking about writing a similar post for quite some time now – you beat me to it!
However, my list is way too long to include in a reply. But awesome writing, and awesome music (…!?)
Here are some tunes I have that are either strange, bizarre, off-beat, just plain dumb, or have people wonder “what were you thinking when you put this on your iPod?”
“Barbie Girl” by Aqua
“Crazy Frog-Axel f” by Bass Bumpers
“Chocolate Salty Balls” by Chef (a.k.a. the late Issac Hayes) from “South Park”
“Detachable Penis” by King Missile
“Tip Toe Thru the Tulips” by Tiny Tim
“Shoes” by Kelly
“Another Christmas Song” by Stephen Colbert (yes, THAT Stephen Colbert)
“Tik Tok” by Ke$ha
“…Baby One More Time” by Britney Spears
“United States of Whatever” by Liam Lynch
haha .. 3 out of these are my secret favorite too 😀
“Britney”? Donny Osmond”?
PEOPLE! PLEASE!
Obviously you’re not *that* embarrassed. . . 😉
i want it that way – backstreet boys. im glad im anonymous
Favorite song of all time… Unless anyone I know asks, in which case it’s some bad ass Led Zeppelin, or whatever the cool kids listen to… But when I’m all alone, and the boys start singing… Damn, do I join them!
But don’t tell anyone…
Hahaha!!! It’s so funny to read the representation of men here. Is it your readership or our embarrassment that makes it so? Nice post. I feel you there. Try to listen Yelle’s ” A Cause de Garçons” and you’ll understand why it’s hard for me to share this except somewhere i’m sure not to me a friend or one of my students. I you understand the lyrics…it’s even more embarrassing.
Break News for guys. I love Eiffel 65 “Blue.” You can thank the long hours in the dark library i’m in for those unexpected revelations.
Cheers.
Love it! I Like to think of myself as an eclectic music collector I too have Pit Bull and Patsy Cline as well as Jack Johnson who I might add is my Guilty pleasure not him really but his childrens song I say they are for my daughter but secretly who doesn’t love Making banana Pancakes! Fun Fun
Breaking free – high school musical…I don’t really know why :S I have an annoying habit of randomly singing this song sponstaneously, my friends think I’m crazy :L
“Musically schizophrenic.” Ha ha! I like that. I am that. I have a few of the same songs you do, and a bunch of others that would cause major eye rolls. I don’t care! If I want to listen to Bobby Darin’s “Beyond the Sea” 14 times in a row before switching to some Led Zeppelin, that’s how it’s gonna be, because it’s MY iPod! And maybe it’s time to download “Chocolate Salty Balls.” I miss the days of listening to Gus sing that at the bar!
I have to say that I am just as schizophrenic, I have all of ACDC, Queen, and Led Zeppelin, as well as drum and fife music, Celtic mourning songs, Jazz piano, and old classics like coco-mo. (Also a whole lot of musicals including all the ones you mention above and more). I also might have all the backstreet boys CDs…
Great post! And all of us who own iPods are sooo busted. I myself am a closet Gaga fan. But shh, don’t tell. 🙂
Not only do I have music on my iPod that I would be embarrassed to talk about but I sometimes add new ones. For example, I just know that sooner or later I am going to be forced to add ABBA to the little box.
I already get quizzical looks from my children. And at a recent family gathering my 16 year old niece asked “Uncle Barry…why do you have 50 cent on your iPod?” It seemed incomprehensible to her that someone involved with the local choral society could like such a thing.
Music is a recurring theme in my life…and my blog come to that. So much ground to cover, and so little time…
Congrats on being freshly pressed.
My mp3(because I’m too cheap to get an ipod) has everything From Tegan and Sara(my favorite band at the moment) to Lady Gaga to The Stray Cats to Austrian Death Machine. I also “suffer” from the condition known as musical schizophrenia and I must say, I quite enjoy it.
No song that makes the list embarassing. If it makes the i-pod, it is not necessarily because the song is awesome but more likely because it is a link to a wonderful memory.
haha .. this sounds really “known” stuff 😉 I admit i have such choices in ym Ipod too .. If you understood my language, i would have shared with you .. but one song that gets me lot of surprised reactions from friends is “hit me baby one more time” …
Fats Waller to Rhianna. Lots of Blues, Mozart, NWA (!), Lords of Acid, Barry Manilow and more! Can’t forget the Showtunes either…
Shows you are comfortable with who you are. There might be a time when you fancy listening to the Old Rugged Cross, followed by a bit of Barry Manilow. Its about what the sounds do for you in your head that keeps them on your lists. Personally, I like to think I am very cultured, that I can appreciate the harmonies in ‘Stacey’s Mom’, the Vocals on ‘Dead Ringer for Love’ and the rousing, spine tingling patriotism of ‘Nimrod’. But if I found out you had Cher’s ‘Believe’ on your iPod, I would probably say you were beyond help.
you are so rite. some songs should not be listened to.
I do! Have a huge selection of music, that is. Except mine ranges from Blue October to Neil Diamond. Then from Beethoven to Skillet. Then Taylor Swift to Opeth. I think having a wide variety of music is good 🙂
It’s like food. You have to have both your vegetables and your protein to stay healthy. Then you need your sweets to keep you going.
Backstreet Boys and Savage Garden…
I am also “musically schitzopherenic,” but I think that’s nice! I tend to call it “eclectic.”
I thought you and I were separated at birth until I got to the bagpipes. Then I reconsidered when I read about the Boston Pops and Pitbull. I see nothing wrong with Timbaland and Dwight Yoakam on the same playlist. With some Patsy Cline and Dusty Springfield thrown in for good measure. Happy listening!
Pretty much my entire mp3 player is embarrassing. It goes from Pirates of the Caribbean, Schindler’s List and Lord of the Rings to My Chemical Romance, to Counting Crows, to assorted Irish dance music, to [dweeb], to Delirious, to other Celtic music where all the titles look the same because they’re in Gaelic, etc …
My friends go through it and say, “What is all this stuff? Why do you listen to it?”
Love the post… yes I have a huge variety of music too… everything from Spice Girls their whole greatest hits album to Roxy Music and the Beatles to Brittany Spears how about 50 cent to Kenny Chesney and Christmas Music to Various Musicals, a little Kid Rock and some Barry White i even have some nature tracks like the ocean waves.
Music to me depends on my mood… sometimes I need something to pump me up… sometimes something to calm me down. A song to remind me about him and a song to remind me that he lost a good thing. Music can and does take me anywhere.
Even funnier than what is on my Ipod is what I still have that isn’t… some crazy stuff… Remember the song Buttermilk Biscuits (I think it was by Sir-Mix-Alot)? That takes me back to cruising with my best friend on a Friday night after the football games. I still have cassette tapes that I had as a kid, some of those are just crazy.
Thanks for the stroll down memory lane.
The Beegees!!! Andy Gibb was smokin’ in the day…haha! The soundtrack of Grease. As much as everyone bashes Michael Jackson….he was da bomb!!! and his music will live on for a long time.
Awesome post Becky!
Hey, talk about eclectic…
forget about the iPod though, I have Wiccan (Celtic Women), What’d I Say (Mina & Celentano & I Ribelli), Ghost Riders in the Storm (Johnny Cash & Willie Nelson), War Pigs (Black Sabbath), and many more on the same playlist…
You shoudn’t be ashamed of your eclectic tastes, I ‘m not 🙂 I hosted a radio for 4 years with this eclectic theme…
“musically schizophrenic”? that’s one of my venerable titles! my ipod library confuses about everyone i know; even my parents!
I’ve got Daft Punk to The Corrs (irish folk), Take That to Kanye West, Britney Spears (cuz everyone needs some Britney!) to Santogold 🙂
I would definitely describe myself as musically schizophrenic! I have everything from old school pop like N’Sync and Britney to Eminem and Kanye West…some older stuff like Jimmy Buffet and Tom Petty, then some softer rock like Graham Colton, Maroon 5 and Dashboard Confessional. I love it all and I’m always in the mood for something different, so I love having the variety that I have.
I have pretty eclectic taste. From Norah Jones to Radiohead to Diana Krall to Nas to Thelonius Monk Led Zeppelin to Bebel Giberto to Wax Poetic to Tribe Called Quest.
I am all over the place. It can be embarassing sometimes depending on what I am listening to when certain friends are in my car.
Justin Beiber- Baby. If my friends and my boyfriend hear about this, they’ll never laet me hear the end of it.
People think I’m crazy for liking boy bands. I can’t help it, I’m a sucker for a guy that can sing and dance. Groups like O-Town, NSYNC, Boys II Men, etc. I can’t get enough!
Variety is the spice of life as they say!
Awesome.
500 Miles is one of my personal all-time favorites as well.
Unashamed! It’s just, amazing.
Appreciated your post.. very true, funny stuff.
Aun Aqui
i have this one “It’s ok” by DJ Maxwell… it’s so ridiculously gay and yet i have it on a loop in mind these days… funny read!
Nice! I have too many to list lol
Tone Loc…Wild Thing…love it!
Rocky Horror Picture Show…Tim Curry…my hero. He made walking in platform shoes soooo sexy.
But, where are any and all Rolling Stone songs? Or any and all Fleetwood Mac songs? Can you tell I’m an old school 70’s and 80’s rocker? : – D
Have you ever had friends over and put the iPod on shuffle? It can provide entertainment and embarassment.
I did years ago and was seriously shocked when some of my more ‘unique’ music started playing.
I have some very interesting songs on my iTunes.
My Top 3 most played are currently:
‘Fairytale’ by Alexander Rybak
‘Just Get Out Of My Head’ by Andrea Demirovic
and
‘In A Moment Like This’ by Chanèe & N’evergreen
Jamie
Loved your post!!! I, too, have a wacky selection of music, but it suits me just fine! I go from Classical to meditation type, soft rock and then Aerosmith comes screamin’ on! I’ve been very tempted to just break out in dance in the gym, but fear that I might get ejected from the workout!! Rock on and keep on creating those fabulous posts! Congrats on “Freshly Pressed”!! 🙂
Carol
I must say that my reaction to some of your examples was puzzlement: That Hanson would be embarassing, that I understand. However, there are other entries that do not make sense on a list of this kind. The paramount example: Amazing Grace—even for those who are not religious, this song is simply … amazing.
As a more general observation, not necessarily relevant for your post, it can pay to differ between pieces of music with different purposes. Consider pure musical enjoyment, relaxation, making a dreary personal mood more up-beat, providing a minor distraction while engaging in a boring task, … Not every piece will be good for everything and even some less-than-mozart music can have a perfectly valid use.
i got publically outed for having awful taste in music when sisqo thong song came on on a road trip. lord. but there is nothing wrong with le mars!!
“Who else has a playlist that runs from Glenn Miller to Lady Gaga, from Pitbull to Patsy Cline, from Blondie to the Boston Pops?”
I do. 🙂 Ha! Seriously though, I have so many different styles of music it is ridiculous.
The entire “Aaron’s Party (Come Get It)” CD by Aaron Carter is the first thing on my iPod in alphabetical order. That should be enough in itself for the “embarrassing” part.
My “Classics for Kids” CD from ages ago.
The Enchanted Soundtrack & the Wicked Soundtrack.
Avril Lavigne; Barlow Girl; Beatles; Belinda Carlisle; Black Eyed Peas; Dave and Brian; DBSK; Demi Lovato; Diamond Rio; Dimitra Galani; Duran Duran; Family Force 5; Flyleaf; Grace Potter & The Nocturnals; Katy (Perry), Ke$ha, and Kerli; KSM; Lady GaGa; Lily Allen; Martina McBride; Metro Station; Muse; My Chemical Romance; Nena; Neon Trees; Nightwish; Norah Jones; Owl City; Pam Noah; Paramore; Pat Benatar; Selena Gomez; Shakira; Shania Twain; Spice Girls; Sugarland; Superchick; Taylor Swift; Trace Adkins; The Veronicas; ZZ Top; etcetera.
That is just an alphabetical list of a few of the different artists I have on my iPod. It doesn’t even begin to cover the wide range of music that I listen to. My other iPod that I can’t find right now has much more music, and a much larger variety.
HmHmm.. Once got lost in belting out an ABBA song in my car, turned to see a huge, bearded trucker, shaking his head sadly. Oh well
Golly, that’s a lot of musicals! But I’m in the same camp, although I haven’t been adding much to my collection lately except for Madonna’s Miles Away and Lady Gaga’s Monster album (my 5 yr old son LOVES Gaga and sings “Booger Face” all the time). I’ve always liked instumental music and dance-techno since high school, not quite a raver but I used to dance like there was no tomorrow. Now I’ve replaced that love for base beats with good eats.
it’s so true! I always feel like the certain majority of one music style on my ipod are judging those odd misfits, songs I love but in all honesty should be embarrassed I even own.
My taste in music is also eclectic, and I will often jump from Andrea Bocelli to Aerosmith depending on how my mood changes. At the moment I’m hooked on Adele and Kings of Leon, but it could all change tomorrow 🙂
Congratulations on being FP!
Didi
Haha! I know what that’s like. My musical tastes are all over the place. Billie Holiday, Pink Floyd, Jars of Clay, and yes (I’ll admit it) Taylor Swift. Throw in “If I Only Had a Brain” from the Wizard of Oz and there you have it: my playlist. Musically schizophreic sounds about right! 🙂
Great post!
My roommate says the same thing about my taste, and I’m pretty sure there’s some old-school Britney Spears lurking on my iPod 🙂
If you die and all that is left of you is your ipod will they be able to identify you? Seemingly yes to each of you by your iprints. Why apologize for or try to explain your DNA?
Nice work.
As for cheesy, I have plenty … as in, 70s AM radio cheese like “Magic” by Pilot and “The Night Chicago Died” by Paper Lace (though in the interest of full disclosure the latter is because it was one of my faves as a kid).
I have classical, jazz, doo-wop, some metal, rap, country, R&B, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s … you get the picture. I’m all over the place as well, which is why I love simply hitting “shuffle” and letting the music take over.
BTW, I also believe that “MMMBop” is damn catchy. And I’m not completely ashamed to admit I like ABBA … at least some of it anyway.
Keep up the good work, and rest assured that fewer people will be laughing at your iPod than you might think.
Wilson Phillips and Princess Pat, oh the glorious memories. Thanks.
The Spice Girls are awesome! As are broadway musical soundtracks
Awesome reflection! The music we listen to can say a lot about us. As a 20 year-old male, I hope some of my hush-hush ipod songs don’t speak too oddly of me:
Gloria Gaynor – I Will Survive
All of Colbie Caillat’s songs
Savage Garden
Backstreet Boys
I could go on, but I’ll spare you (and myself).
Variety is the spice of life, is it not? Angie Stone, Ashanti, Backstreet Boys, Baz Luhrmann, Black Eyed Peas, Bon Jovi, Britney Spears, Bruno Mars, Busta Rhymes, CAKE, Charlie Wilson, Coldplay, Creed, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, Eric Clapton, Erykah Badu, Evanescence, Garbage….yes, even a Hanson & Aaron Carter.
Different tastes for different moods & different days. 🙂
[…] recently read a post (you can check it out here, and you should definitely check out the photography while you’re there) in which the author […]
Personally, I don’t think I’ve ever been embarrassed about anything on my iPod. My eclectic taste in music is part of who I am. I love everything from Broadway and movie soundtracks to hip-hop to disco to Barbara Streisand. I’m definitely not embarrassed by any of it. 🙂
[…] Ok, admit it. You have songs on your ipod (or mix CD's or computer or whatever) that you should be embarassed that you have. N’Sync, 00’s Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, Backstreet Boys, 90’s Mariah Carey, and Miley Cyrus. You’d think my ipod belonged to a 12 year old. I couldn’t help it! I had all of those CDs from when I was younger and they make a great addition to any workout! Haha!
There’s nothing wrong with having guilty pleasure songs…as one would have guilty pleasure books and films.
Young MC and Nelson are perfectly acceptable and need not be guilty pleasures. ^_^
thats hilarious I love this article I just started using wordpress and I’d love for you to check my blog. I just posted a hilarious story. Leave comments and tell me what you think. Thank you
Oh gawd “bust a move” by young MC. THe best. You forgot “Push it” by Salt and Pepa. haha.
A few years ago, while looking for some Billy Bragg in a record store, I stumbled upon a wonderful CD of popular bands doing kids’ songs. So now amongst my already varied music library (ABBA, 50 Cent, Willie Nelson, System of a Down, Portishead, Peter Paul and Mary) there are some amazing kids songs by Cake, Barenaked Ladies, Billy Bragg and Tom Waits. (Think “La la la la lemon” and “I’ve Got to Be Clean”) – in case anyone wants to check it out, the album was called For The Kids. It’s one of my top ten albums of all times, and yeah, I’m in my thirties.
Finally. Someone else likes bagpipe music.
Ice Ice Baby and The Humpty Dance! Shameful, I know, but great running tunes.
Here goes:
Owl City
half of HP Deathly Hallows (audio book)
scores for the first three hp movies
sleep music
suzuki violin books 1-4
suzuki piano book 1
Avril Lavigne
Taylor Swift
Emily Osment
John Denver
Randy Travis
Ben E. King
Alvin and the Chipmunks
GREEN DAY!!!
Maroon 5
Michelle Branch
scores of pottercast episodes (200ish)
I think that’s it but i proably missed a few. The first 3 are my favorites (and the last one). I don’t actually have my i-pod with me, these are off the top of my head. Call me crazy.
I feel ya. I’ve only recently come to the realization that not only am I a music Sybil, but I am also a music snob! Oh the humanity! 😉
hahaha love this! I have to admit my music tastes are slightly crazy as well and I have at least 4 of the songs you listed on my ipod as well but throw in some ZZ Top, Twisted Sister, Mumford and Sons, The Decemberists and a host of others.
I think that is one of the great things about music, it speaks to the individual as well as a group of people. It binds memories and people to our hearts in ways that mere words can not.
Love the term “musically schizophrenic”! People always give me a hard time over my Ipod, but I sing and dance to each one on there and you never know when they’ll come in handy on a road trip! It’s making playlists that I always have trouble list. Think i have it just perfect and then realize I forgot a song
true-to-the-loo! 😀
I’ve got crazy variety like that too! Currently on my MP3 player I have the following:
Celtic Woman
Frank Sinatra
Johnny Cash
Josh Groban
Josh Turner
Julianne Hough
Lady GaGa
Michael Buble
Katy Perry
Jennifer Knapp
BarlowGirl
Kari Jobe
random Celtic music
Flyleaf
ZoeGirl
Christmas music
random 80s music
soundtracks from movies and stage musicals: Phantom of the Opera (the movie), Wicked, and Fiddler on the Roof
And this list doesn’t include my many CDs I don’t yet have on it yet. ^_^
Suspicious Minds by Elvis! LOVE IT. But it’s my secret…..
I shouldn’t be ashamed of having MC Hammer’s “Can’t touch this” should I?
From one “musical schizophrenic” to another…I salute you! =)
Yep that is a little schizophrenic music haha. I love old George Michaels i.e. like anything on “listen without prejudice” . OK I’m a little bit of a dork there but really I do have a wide range of taste like you haha.
Nope i’m totally cool. Sorry.
Wait…. Weird Al Yankovic songs. All of them!
My name is [Redacted] and I listen to crap music occasionally.
“Hi [Redacted]!”
My List o’ Shame:
This is Ponderous (2NU); She Blinded Me With Science (Thomas Dolby); Kimi Sae Ireba (Hayashibara Megumi); We Can Be Heroes (The Wallflowers); Play It Loud (MxPx); The Hackers soundtrack(s); J`ai Pas Vingt Ans! (Alizée); and dozens of movie scores and soundtracks.
Embrace your list! It’s cool.
🙂 … which is why I don’t like my friends browsing through my Ipod for a very long time… Songs that I listen to alone in the car after a long day at work:
1. Turn out the lights- Nelly Furtado
2. A thousand miles- Vanessa Carlton
3. That’s not my name- The Ting Tings
4. I want to break free- Queen
5. Don’t wanna miss a thing- Aerosmith
“John Denver and the Muppets; Christmas Album”
(No chipmunks though)
Most of Johnny Cash
Anonymous Four
Janice Joplin (very very LOUD)
Mmmbop is a bad one, but Spice Girls is nothing to be ashamed of… *hides all 3 Spice Girl CDs in closet*
But seriously, everyone has their own individual tastes. My weridest CDs would probably be Ace of Base: The Bridge. I still listen to that album. And apparently, Lady Gaga as well…
considering i was born in the mid 90’s and i should be having only mainstream, i have a few songs from the time before i was born and only one of my friend knows about them…yeah it’s that embarrassing, but the songs from the days-i-never-existed are much much better than the songs coming out nowadays. Atleast the lyrics were SOMETHING back then, now, it’s only adrenaline rushes that last for just a few plays

Backstreet Boys – Millennium album.
Bardot’s album. They won that Australian TV show Pop stars… That’s exactly why it’s embarrassing.
I don’t know. I love all the songs on my iPod and am not afraid to admit it. The only one I could actually think of being ever so slightly embarrassing (which I’m not even embarrassed about, I just get a lot of people to be like, “FOR REAL!?”) would be:
“Best Day Ever” by SpongeBob SquarePants.
Hello! dbdgfka interesting dbdgfka site!
Haha.. I love it! its so true hey, I think I have the whole hanson cd on my ipod.. haha.. Great post!

I still crank Gary Glitter when I work out.
Being an anime fan, I have a lot of anime soundtracks on my iPod right now. Plus some old techno from the mid-90s, lol.
Disney Soundtracks … although the most obscure is The Lion II.
I … uh… even know the words to the English version.
Did I admit that out loud?
Oops!
Hi..thanks for your nice post.I am an Iranian. I like Arian bond.

I love Disney soundtracks! Especially Pocahontas and Lion King. Jungle Book 1 too! 🙂
Ooo and I like Butterfly Fly Away too 😀
Great post!
Sounds like you could do with some
“Laptevinmeri”
by
Finnish
electro duo
“Pan Sonic”
To be so embarrassed by liking something is silly. I still pop in Eiffel 65 for a good listen here and there.
It’s iPod, not IPod or ipod. When your heading has a mistake that’s pretty embarrassing.
Thank you for catching my mistake. I have corrected it.
I know exactly how you feel. I always have to defend my choice of songs before anyone even gets a chance to see/hear what is on my iPod. I have a random taste in music, ranging from Muse to Motown, to the Hairspray soundtrack to Robbie Williams, and a few R ‘n’ B, hop hop, rap, Miley Cyrus…I could go on forever…
I have a share of embarrassing songs as well! And worse, I have embarrassing CD albums…I was thinking of selling them in a garage sale, but then that means people seeing my awful taste in music way back! haha that’s all you can say now to yourself–what was I thinking??
The songs to be embarassed about aren’t in a playlist 😀
Your blog is therapeutic. I though I was wierd. I’m ecclectic also, and can add to your list:
Michael Jackson’s A-B-C,
Irish pub/drinking songs (I’ve got a gigabyte of Irish songs),
Ladysmith Black Mambazo (I’ve got nearly every album)
Rolf Harris (not kookaburra, but Tie Me Kangaroo Down)
Playlist of Zydeco / Cajun
Medieval Welsh chants
Reggae (which wouldn’t be complete without bob marley)
…but the ultra embarrassment:
civil war tunes (cumberland three, smith brothers, few others)
i got The Beatles right next to Trivium and Bach right next to The Prodigy
Call me crazy but my embarrassing song “I call it love”- Lionel Richie… I just can’t come to pressing the skip when it pops up.
Ooh girl, I have a bit of everything on my iPod, from Nicki Minaj to Pink , Hall & Oates to Ben Harper, the late Reverend James Cleveland to Aretha Franklin’s gospel days, from (Loosen up My) Buttons by the Pussycat Dolls to the Chronic album by Doctor Dre!! Oh, I’m on a roll now! Just hope they don’t find the one where Dr. Dre & Snoop are reveling while they “smoke Indo” before the track comes on. I’ll probably never run for political office should that ever happen! It’s all love though…music is good for the soul. You can always censor it by not listening to it, but the diversity of music that we listen to says a lot about us, so you can call me musically schizophrenic as well! Rock out, girl!
Thanks for sharing. I have my share of “embarrasing” songs on my iTunes library, and some of them make it onto my iPod Nano. I like to call them “guilty pleasures”, but I’m not really guilty liking them.
Definitely gotta go with Backstreet Boys on this one. I was obsessed in elementary school, and now look back on that choice with embarrassment. But hey, we all have our regrettable phases that make us who we are today right?
Looking at your list is the major reason that I never have an open iPod party because I know that buried in there somewhere is the PokeRap. And although I’d enjoy it and try to rap along with it I doubt others could dance to it, haha.
Bette Midler – “Wind Beneath My Wings”
Enough said.
Also…don’t hate.
Ummm…”Bust a Move” by Young MC is one of the best songs, from my youth or not. That whole album rocked. There’s no embarrassment in that one.
Great post. Made me smile. I can’t say I agree with your choices, but you’re braver than I am. There’s songs I won’t even put on my iPod because I’ve tried to dissociate myself from them.
lol. I admit it… I do have some that kind of songs….
I have “Wanna be” in my list too.
Another one is McDonald’s “I m loving it.”
Thanks for pointing this out for me.
Lol This cracked me up. I don’t have much embarrassing songs on my Zune but I have a lot of marching band music…which to anyone who isn’t in band seems pretty lame 😛
I hear ya’, therocknwriter. I marched in a drum & bugle corps from 6th grade through the first year I was married, and I STILL love to listen to a rockin’ horn line!
Awesome! Any person who marches has much respect. I did a lot of marching band/drum corp. I’m still in the marching band (I’m a senior in college). I find myself jamming out to some great halftime shows. Good times 🙂 Glad I’m not the only one!
If you like broadway, you should listen to “In to the Woods”
I can send you if you like 🙂
and Bruno Mars is awesome what are you talking about!!!
most of my embarrassing music is apparently really bubbly j-pop
Interesting Post. you have guts gal. You won’t find ppl admitting they have something like this
good read

mmmmmbop not heard that song in ages. Your post is very true. There’s a few songs that I like that I really shouldn’t admit too. One of them is The Safety Dance by Men Without Hats.
well, I guess I can relate with you…. Sometimes I tried to hide my iPod to keep out on letting people know stupid songs exist in my iPod haha…. but what’s wrong with music type anyway?
Well I’m proud when I say that I have a good musical taste (but I think we all are, aren’t we?).
But I do have some totally random and a bit embarrassing anthems on my computer. But the thing is… of them I’m the most proud!!!
Here Are Some:
Eddie Murphy – Party All The Time (OH YEAH!)
Five – Slam Dunk Da Funk (I used to ski to this song!! OMG)
All of Jem & The Holograms ‘discography’
Michael Bolton – Said I Loved you… But I Lied
Ashlee Simpson – Boyfriend
A Teens – Floorfiller (hahahahaha, so good!!)
Eric Carmen – Hungry Eyes
Jim Capaldi – Something So Strong
Olivia Newton John – Physical (But I don’t this should be cause of embarrassment)
Some S Club 7 songs
And some latin songs that you will have never heard of (I am Argentinian but don’t really like latin music).
But well, what would be of us without some cheese, catchy, and awesome pop to lip synch to!?
I know exactly where you are coming from. My ipod is an auditory Picaso; Led Zeppelin, Eminem, Junior Kimborough, The Beastie Boys, Gorillaz, Tobacco, Bassnecter, Elton John, and one Men At Work song. It’s a little crazy when I am on my way to school listening to Radiohead and then the following song is Flogging Molly. But I love my ipod.
Ok yes, since the cats already out of the bag, I have to say I have some songs I hide from other people on my iPod. I would have been to embarrassed to post my own crappy songs on my blog but you’ve already done that!
1. I only recognized about 3 of those selections, all 3 of which I too have on my Ipod.
2. Bagpipe music is awesome.
3. I gave up trying to defend my “schizo” Ipod selections from prying friends, and now proudly blast my Cat Stevens, Ashley MacIsaac, and Glee cast recordings for all to hear. Who cares what you listen to on your own time? It’s part of your individuality.
4. If I receive complaints in the car while I’m driving, I crank the volume and say “Deal with it”
🙂
Your iPod is awesome. People always look at me strange because I have The Who songs that are the various CSI themes and the album picture is Horatio Caine. I named the album “Horatio Caine Approves of this Album”
I’ll always have a soft spot for Savage Garden. Cheesy, inherently catchy crap pop? Absolutely. But I still love it.
I really don’t care about what people think about my choice of music. i love and i am going to listen to it. Get your own so what I am actually trying to say is that that’s your choice and no one should take you away from it.
Ha ha lovely blog. Where I come from we play iPod Roulette which can be very embarrasing for some. All you do is stick your iPod or generic MP3 player on shuffle and see what happens. It’s probably best not played at parties because you could kill the mood quite quickly! However on a long journey or bored at work it’s a great way to pass time.
i plead guilty 😛
wow you’ve got some real skeletons there.
I’d have to say: Nelly, Black Eyed Peas, and a bunch of downtown crap thats really terrible… lol
I just sent this post to a bunch of my friends as I agree with most of what you’re saying here and the way you’ve presented it is awesome.
Here are some of my favoriate songs: Life After You – By Daughtry, Your Love Is My Drug – By Ke$ha, Yesterday – By The Beatles, Stayin’ Alive – By The Bee Gees, Rude Boy – By Rihanna, Life After You – By Daughtry, Whipping Post – By The Allman Brothers Band, (We’re Gonna) Rock Around the Clock – By Bill Haley and His Comets, Speedin’ – By Omarion, There Is A Way – By Newworldson, Blitzkrieg Bop – By Ramones, When a Man Loves a Woman – By Percy Sledge, One Time – By Justin Bieber, Do You Remember – By Jay Sean, Be-Bop-A-Lula – By Gene Vincent and His Blue Caps, Stayin’ Alive – By The Bee Gees. You can listen to these [url=http://all-free-music-downloads.com/]Free Music Downloads[/url] Online for free.
I’ve been visiting your blog for a while now and I always find a gem in your new posts. Thanks for sharing.
I adore MmmBop… But don’t tell anyone…
Seriously, what’s wrong with Young MC!
When your music taste varies so much, it’s called being “diverse” 😛
WOW I really know what you mean. As a new music producer I’m trying to work out what makes a “damn catchy” tune as you say 😉 . I’m told it’s well written song with a good hook but I’m sure there’s lots of those out there that just don’t get heard. In fact I would REALLY appreciate it if you would have a read of my resent blog and let me know what you think of “Save The World?”
Thank for a great blog
John

nice idea for a post! 🙂
Excellently written article, if only all bloggers offered the same level of content as you, the internet would be a much better place. Definitely keep it up!
Fantastic, and easy to relate to. I like that music. You shouldn’t be too embarrassed by your music. What you like is what you like. Music shouldn’t humiliate a person; it should just help describe what pleases someone.
The article is great, I just wanted to put my opinion in the mixture.
What a great idea for a post, love reading everyone’s “confessions”! 😉
I’m another “musically schizophrenic” individual … with everything from David Archuleta’s new album “The Other Side of Down” (quit snickering, dude can SING!) to Toronto’s KAOS and Metric to Led Zeppelin’s “Been a Long Time,” Thelonius Monk, Cecilia Bartoli, both Chaka Khan and Whitney’s versions of “I’m Every Woman” and Little Richard singing “I Feel Pretty” from a West Side Story cover compilation! *blushes*
So many so many … Disney music is such a guilty pleasure, Barbie Girl, old Avril Lavigne’s Sk8r Boi — such a classic, Fall Out Boy from ‘that’ phase in high school! But the worst offender: Miley Cyrus songs … they’re catchy but even I am embarrassed for myself for owning and listening to them…
But still – I have a lot of good music too (and somewhat of an eclectic collection at that) and I’m not embarrassed about any of my Beatles music, or Led Zeppelin, No Doubt, or Les Mis music. It’s just amazing stuff.

Justin Bieber >.<
I let someone listen to my ipod at school, and they threw my ipod because of the song embarassment. They also called it skanky because it is a 5th gen, has burn marks, and is taped together.
I can top all of you for embarrassment on my iPod–I have my own home recordings of songs I’ve written myself on mine! I literally threaten people not to play those (or, at least, loudly) whenever they scroll through my iPod!
this post is HILLARIOUS… i have far too many to mention… but i will say i embrace the cheesey-ness of some of the songs i have on my itunes!!… I WILL NOT BE embarrased by music… i refuse!!! 😀
Ok ive made my decision, im subscribing, this is awesome, keep it comin.
Hello just thought i would tell you something.. This is twice now i’ve landed on your blog in the last 2 days looking for completely unrelated things. Spooky or what?
Haha that list is awesome and I think I may end up downloading some that I don’t already have from your list. I think that Mmmbop is on most people’s guilty listening list…it’s on mine! Thanks for the great post! Keep it up!
http://fluffyglutton.com
‘Bust A Move’ is AMAZING. I feel no guilt for loving it!
Spotify really comes into it’s own as far as embarrassment avoidance goes… I delete the search bar after listening & nobody ever knows 😀
xo
I have no problem admitting that I’ve MMMBopped my head to that song several times. Don’t be ashamed. Without naming specific songs, my Ipod ranges from Gin Blossoms to Charlie Daniels Band. From Dean Martin to Jimmy Rodgers. From Creed to Ween. If you haven’t heard the song, “Your Party” by Ween, I beg of you to give it a listen.
